What is Youth ANZAAS?

Youth ANZAAS is a residential national conference for approximately 60 science students in Years 10, 11 and 12 from Australian and New Zealand schools. Each year the conference is held in a different city in Australia or New Zealand.

The conference is organised by the Australian & New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS), to give students a broad perspective on the aims and practice of scientific endeavour, ranging from satisfying curiosity and the drive to discover, to the application of science in the real world. The conference also allows students to meet likeminded peers and other young adults who share their passion for science.

ANZAAS' objective in offering the YA programme is to bring a wide range of benefits to the student participants, their schools and community by:

  • Encouraging the curiosity of students about nature and helping to develop their respect for knowledge based on rigorous observation and deduction
  • Raising the social status of students interested in science within their school and community through their selection for the programme, thereby enhancing the perception of science in their peer group
  • Increasing interest in and awareness of science and technology
  • Providing a venue where students can meet others with similar interests to themselves
  • Providing hands-on experience with science and with the workings of notable scientific establishments and laboratories
  • Providing personal contact between students and leading scientists who can act as role models
  • Demonstrating to students that science and technology are realistic career choices
  • Encouraging the continuing participation of students in scientific subjects
  • Broadening the students' experience of science substantially beyond what is usually gained in the classroom
  • Providing students, particularly those from a rural community, with a life experience in a new and stimulating environment
  • Providing participants with an enduring network of likeminded peers and with continuing support for further science activities in their schools and communities.

The selection of delegates is based on academic merit and interest in science. Disadvantaged and remote backgrounds are taken into account.

Youth ANZAAS Conferences are fully supervised by responsible adults.
