THE JOYCE ALLEN LECTUREBackground Joyce Elma Allen was a retired school teacher and a dedicated member of ANZAAS who attended most of the seminars in NSW and many of the Congresses in other States. In 1990 Miss Allen wrote to us informing us that she intended to include a bequest to ANZAAS in her will - `....because I think that the meeting of scientists at ANZAAS conferences and the sharing of their ideas and techniques is a particularly valuable and stimulating factor in the spreading of knowledge of this amazing planet and of the development of the physical, mental and spiritual health of those who are privileged to dwell on it and thrill to its wonders and beauty.' Her letter then concluded with this quotation: `Ever around the actual is a halo of infinite mystery' Miss Allen passed away on the 18th of January 1994 and at its next meeting the ANZAAS Council initiated a lecture in her memory to be known as the `Joyce Allen Lecture'.
