"Four dimensional view into the Earth through deep-time data-mining"

The University of Sydney is Australia's premier University with an outstanding reputation for academic and research excellence.

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in Plate Tectonics/Geodynamics working with Professor Dietmar Muller's EarthByte Group at the School of Geosciences, The University of Sydney, as part of the project "The Virtual Geological Observatory: a four dimensional view into the Earth through deep-time data-mining". The position will focus on building plate kinematic models, including plate deformation, and on linking plate kinematic models to mantle convection, mantle seismic tomography and geological observations, such as palaeogeography, basin stratigraphy, and data constraining rock uplift.

Successful candidates must have:

  • An undergraduate degree and an MSc degree (or first-class Honours degree) in geology or geophysics
  • An interest to carry out research at the interface between geophysics and geology
  • Experience with scripting/programming, especially in an OSX/Unix/Linux environment (e.g. shell scripting, Python or C++)
  • Expertise in long-term geodynamics/plate tectonics and some aspect of computational/numerical modeling
  • Knowledge of common computer software for data analysis and map making, eg. Matlab, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT)
  • An ability to work as part of a research team
  • Good communication skills, and an ability to present results both orally and in written form.
Additional information about the group's research can be found at www.earthbyte.org and about related software development at www.gplates.org
